WE LANDED BY MOONLIGHT   By Hugh Verity

The Secret RAF Landings in France 1940-1944

For most of the Second World War the RAF flew small aircraft at night into occupied France, landing behind enemy lines and taking off in total secrecy. Their mission was to transport agents to and from France to support the activities of the French Resistance and SOE. Pilots flew alone, often many hours deep into enemy territory, where landings were made in darkness on rough fields, pilots guided in only by hand-held torches of resistance agents. The pilots of this special force required exceptional flying and navigational skills, and an unusual brand of courage.

Author Group Captain Hugh Verity, highly decorated and considered possibly the most outstanding pick-up pilot of them all, himself flew many of the missions recounted in this remarkable book. An extraordinary adventure story, he describes the hazards of landing in darkened fields never knowing when a spy cell had been compromised and armed Gestapo were lying in wait, and tells of hair-raising missions where they were. He talks of clandestine radios, secret messages, agents and double agents, and marquis volunteers who braved capture and torture to rendezvous with the pilots who flew these dangerous missions.

There was nobody was better qualified than Hugh Verity to expose the secrets of the RAF's clandestine pick-up operations in France - operations that profoundly influenced the modern history of the two countries between which these hazardous missions were flown. His is a remarkable story.

This illustrated First Edition book is complete with dust jacket and in new condition and is mounted with a bookplate signed by Group Captain Hugh Verity, DSO and bar, DFC.
